Autonomous Vehicle

Dr Anthony Baxendale of  Horiba MIRA  (www.horiba-mira.com ) spoke to the CIE about Autonomous Vehicles, and the current progress and research.  Many aspects of Autonomous vehicles are alreadty available, adaptive cruise control, park assist, satnav, and progress towards full autonomy builds on these.  He set out the path to full autonomy in a matrix of increasing automation, and decreasing driver control, which we are partway along.  Progress needs to be made in surprising areas, such as legislation and cyber security.  Hacking into systems controlling co-operative movement of vehicles could present threats to safety and security.  Dr Baxendale concluded with an amusing quote from the infancy of motoring, demonstrating the power of hindsight!!
