The Government has recently opened Gateway 2, a window in which companies can apply to participate in the new Construction and Built Environment (C&BE) Diploma for 14-19-year-olds, which will be available in some schools from 2008.

Developed by the Diploma Development Partnership, which includes five sector skills councils and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board, the Diploma will combine practical skill development with theoretical and technical knowledge within the context of construction and the built environment.

Its specific sector content will include – the impact of the built environment on the community, professions such as architecture, civil engineering and the building services, regulatory framework, and enterprise and management challenges.

Forty-four Diploma consortia, including employers, schools and colleges, have so far been approved to deliver the C&BE Diploma from next year.

Companies that have signed on include Wates, Balfour Beatty, Lovell, G&J Seddon and CB&I.

Employers can sign up to the approved consortia, or have until 3 December to register interest with schools and colleges that are applying to take part in Gateway 2.
