Need for Technicians

What is a Technician?

Technician members have an ordinary national certificate or diploma in materials, minerals, mining or a related discipline. They apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical problems. Those working in an engineering environment (as opposed to a scientific environment) can register with the Engineering Council as professional Engineering Technicians.  Full details of the requirements for Technician membership can be found here.

Associate members will have completed an honours degree or will hold a higher national certificate / diploma together with some additional training. They apply this knowledge to optimise the application of existing science and engineering, and to contribute to the introduction of novel science or emerging technology. Associate members working as engineers (rather than scientists) are awarded the professional qualification Incorporated Engineer. Full details of the requirement for Associate Membership can be found here.

For both Technician members and Associate members, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining offers:

  • Recognition of your status as a professional. Our membership grades are linked to professional qualifications which are recognised world-wide
  • Access to the network of other professionals engaged in materials science and engineering. The Institute has over 20,000 members in 70 countries.
  • Technical information to support you in your decision making. The Institute organises international conferences and meetings, and runs an information help-desk to provide advice and assistance in solving everyday problems.
  • Support and advice in gaining professional qualifications.
  • A special membership package for students on full-time and part-time courses.

Application forms for student membership are available here.
