Corrosion of Infrastructure

18 Apr 2012, 1 Carlton House Terrace, London, UK
Organised by IOM Communications on behalf of the Corrosion Committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
This event has been postponed.

The annual cost of corrosion in terms of Gross Domestic Product is approximately 3-4% and it is of no surprise that a large proportion of this cost relates to indirect or hidden costs, for example loss of containment of product, pollution remediation, loss of production, increased maintenance and litigation costs. It has been recognised that up to 25% of this cost can be saved by applying existing knowledge of the basic principles of corrosion science and engineering.
The Corrosion Committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Institute of Corrosion are pleased to announce this one-day seminar that will address the causes of corrosion failure and the approaches that can be taken to mitigate environmental degradation issues.

The conference will consist of invited presentations from key speakers. The aim is to bring together engineers, material scientists and those involved in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure in sectors such as oil & gas, chemical and process, transport, power generation, highways & buildings, in order to compare experience and engineering practice. The meeting will be relevant to those involved in design, fabrication or operation, maintenance and asset management. Materials of construction that will be considered include; carbon steel, Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs), light and high temperature alloys. Corrosion processes such as general and localised corrosion (pitting, crevicing), galvanic corrosion of dissimilar metal joints, stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue will be presented. Corrosion prevention strategies applied in the different sectors will be discussed.
Meeting Themes & Speakers include:
  • Robert Akid – Sheffield Hallam University – Meeting Chair - IOM3.
  • Chris Atkins – Mott MacDonald – The Role of Standards/Certification in Improving the Integrity of Infrastructure.
  • Stuart Matthews – Building Research Establishment (BRE) – Innovations in Concrete Construction: Some past, present and
  • future influences on durability and sustainability.
  • Elena Barton – National Physical Laboratory (NPL) – NPL Footbridge: a study of concrete durability and corrosion.
  • Ken Dykes – Freyssinet – Sustaining our Structures - An overview of electrochemical techniques available for the protection and refurbishment of structures.
  • Shiladitya Paul – TWI – Protection of Offshore Structures using Coatings.
  • Colin Argent – MACAW Engineering – Corrosion Issues on High Pressure Welded Steel Transmission Pipelines.
  • Steve Walters – National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) – UK Nuclear Power Plant Aspects of Infrastructure Corrosion.
  • Paul Lambert – Mott MacDonald – Overview and Round-up of the Meeting (ICorr).
